Digital Collages
These works were begun in January of 2021. I started to teach myself Photoshop technical skills so that I could create unique images in which the “original “ would be the computerised file format. I collage, distort, and layer parts from various previous paintings, drawings, mixed-media sculpture and photographs. Out of the many, a new and singular image emerges.
These digital works are a new printmaking medium for me; the labor lies in the searching and constant editing of the computer screen “canvas” until I finally arrive at a conclusion that comes close to that inexpressible feeling I am trying to make visual. The resulting image is new but all the pieces of content span decades of my life.
Paintings & Drawings
I have always been essentially an imagist, even in my most abstract bodies of work. I use elements of the natural landscape that I have observed all around me to convey feelings of movement and transition. My subject matter is a range—from imaginary places that are filled with water, tree, and bird references, to portrait studies of some of my favourite trees and birds. The landscapes are the theatre set and the trees and birds are the actors. All represent the joy I experience when in the presence of nature in all its forms.
I need my walks through the woods where I can see and hear all the birds that I have learned to identify over the years, and feel comfort knowing that such wild and free creatures coexist with these ancient trees that are indifferent to any mortal ego of self-importance.
My sense of wonder and awe continues when I observe the night sky with all the patterns of star constellations and planets that arc above my limited vision. Rather than feel diminished by the light years measured by human constructs of miles and time, I am grateful to be part of an infinite continuum which is forever mysterious.
And I am amazed by my journey into life.
